Friday's Short Review: The Twisted Tale of Stormy Gale by Christine Bell

Stormy Gale was born in 1810 in London. Her childhood was lived begging in the streets along with other children. Until she had the fortune of meeting Gilly. He was a time traveler from the XXI century who took pity of her and her closest friend Bacon (Yes, that is his name) and offered them a better life with him in the future. They didn’t consider the offer twice and accepted. Gilly adopted and treated them as his own children. He also taught them the art of time traveling.

Now Stormy and Bacon are time-traveler pirates. Who go back in time to change little things that won’t affect the future and to acquire small artifacts to sell in ebay.

In one of those trips to the year 1936, Bacon lost his TTM (Time Traveler Mechanism). He lost it in a game of cards against the Loony Duke of Leister.  Now they need to recover it. A TTM in the wrong hands could be disastrous.

They schemed a plan to trick the Duke and recover the TTM; but things don’t go according to plan and the trickster is the one surprisingly tricked.

The Twisted Tale of Stormy Gale is a short story, with an original plot. It was also quiet entertaining. But it was a little bit off pace; the first part of the story moves in a nice pace while the last third felt rushed.

I loved the contrast shown from life in the XIX century to the commodities of the XXI. I think the author did a great job explaining these differences in the lives of Stormy and Bacon. And loved it even more when Stormy is explaining them to Devlin, especially the part about dog’s grooming, LOL.

Stormy is a great character; she is compelling, caring, loyal and funny. Bacon is a young man with a good heart, and a little bit too innocent. He is always getting in trouble or screwing up. And Stormy is always rescuing him from these circumstances. They are not blood siblings but they love each other as if they were. Life’s circumstances had tied them together more than blood could ever have.

Devlin, I don’t know what to say about him, we see glimpses of him but nothing to deep to really get an impression. Ok, he is a good man and has been since he was a child, but further than there is not much we know about him.

My final thought: The Twisted Tale of Stormy Gale is an entertaining story, with some good aspects and others no so good. As I said before I loved its original plot and I also loved the world created. But, yes there is a but here, and it’s with Devlin and the way things developed between him and Stormy, here is where I had some problems with the book. Devlin is an X person, we don’t know anything about him, who comes to Stormy life (again), they have a talk and suddenly they are in love… mmm… sorry, but no. I know The Twisted Tale of Stormy Gale is a short story, but this could have been done a lot better. It was too much, too fast. This doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoyed it, because I did, maybe if it was a little bit longer Mrs. Bell could have done it better, without rushing events at the end.

If you want a fast, entertaining, original story with a touch of Steampunk, The Twisted Tale of Stormy Gale is a good option for you.

I hope to see a longer sequel of this book.

Review: Enclave by Ann Aguirre

Enclave is the first book in the Razorland Series by Ann Aguirre.

The above description of the book pretty much summarizes it. I also don’t want to give much away; Enclave is a book you need to discover for yourself.

I’m not a fan of dystopian novels, with just the exception of The Hunger Games, but further than that I haven’t like any other book in this genre, until I read Enclave. And I did not liked Enclave, I LOVED IT!

To be honest, I wasn’t planning to read Enclave. All the previous dystopian novels I had read were predictable and repetitive. But last couple of weeks everywhere I was looking (Twitter, Goodreads,…) people were talking about it, so I said to myself, ok let’s see what’s all the noise about. And let me tell you that since the moment I started reading Enclave I didn’t do anything else until I finished it at three in the morning. I couldn’t do anything else. I was completely lost in its pages and the world Mrs. Aguirre created.

Talking about the world, it was magnificent. Sometimes I think about the book and for seconds I’m not sure if I read the book or watch the movie. My recollections of the scenes are so vivid that my brain gets confused and doesn’t know the difference.

I loved how real Mrs. Aguirre depicted every little detail within the world, the characters and the way their surroundings affected them.

Now getting to the characters: Deuce is a girl with an extraordinary endures. She is willing to sacrifice herself to save her friend. Her world was literally moved from under her feet, and still she prevailed. It’s not that she was not scared, because she was, but she is determined to do what was needed for her and Fade to survive. She also experienced a big cultural shock; almost everything in which she believed was false, and instead of falling apart she strengthened and matured.

Fade is a young man touch by tragedy and loss. For these reasons he is perceive as a very mysterious character. He has a secret and a painful past, he has never shared with anyone until he met Deuce. He is a protector, and somebody you can rely on. Slowly we learn more about him, and everything we learn about him makes us love him even more. He is a survivor in all the sense of the word.

Deuce and Fade depend on each other for their survival and the circumstances make them develop a very close relationship, where there may be feelings involved. But Deuce was never taught to love just to be a fighter (Huntress), so they will need to have a process of discovery and acceptance. I just hope when the time is right, they have their HEA; they are good for each other.

The secondary characters that standout the most are Stalker and Tegan. Both had a very difficult life, and because of that they have done horrible things. Stalker to keep the leadership position in a gang and Tegan because she was weak and was forced to. 

I wanted to hate Stalker, but his circumstances made me impossible to do it, he is the product of the society in which he grew up, and doesn’t know any better. But when he is given the opportunity to change and become someone better he grabbed it with both hands and began his improvement.

Other characters that standout are the Freaks. The Freaks are zombie like creatures that eats anything that is alive. They were very primitive in the beginning but slowly they are acquiring some level of intelligence and are becoming a bigger danger. I have my guesses about to them. I will see if I’m right in future books.

Enclave is a novel of survival, pack with action; with a plot that will have you glue to your seat. It has also a touch of romance, promises and possibilities.

Ann aguirre writing is spotless and entangling. And it will leave you wanting for more.

The first thing I did after finishing Enclave was to contact Mrs. Aguirre and ask her when was the next book in this series going to be available. She kindly let me know that Outpost will be release in Fall 2012. Is still a faraway date, but one I’m looking forward to.

I recommend this book to all dystopian lovers, same as YA lovers or any one who wants to read a great book.

The Restorer is the first book in The Graveyard Queen Series by Amanda Stevens.

Cemetery restorer, Amelia Gray saw her first ghost when she was nine. Since that day she has live by the rules her father indoctrinated in her:

·      Never acknowledge the dead.

·      Never stray far from hallowed ground.

·      Never associate with those who are haunted.

·      Never, ever tempt fate.

Her father can also see the dead and knows the repercussions this will have in Amelia’s life, for that reason he gave her these rules to protect her.

When the body of a murder victim is found in the cemetery she is restoring; Amelia is asked to collaborate with police.  But when she meets the leading detective in the investigation, John Devlin, she starts to break the rules.

Devlin is haunted by the ghosts of his dead wife and daughter. Amelia knows she should keep her distance from him, she knows she shouldn’t break the rules; she also knows that being close to Devlin might have dire consequences for her. But circumstances in the investigation and the strong attraction that pulls them together will make this even more difficult for her.

I loved The Restorer, it was a very different book from the books usually found in the market. Mrs. Stevens did an amazing job creating this unique world. I loved how detailed it was, from the textures, to the colors, to the smells, to the senses, it was marvelous. There were pages where I could almost smell the magnolias or jasmines. Or others in which I could almost feel the chill of the ghost touching my arm, I know it sounds creepy, because it was, but at the same time, it was a beautiful-creepy.

I have always found old cemeteries beautiful and interesting, and I loved how Mrs. Stevens incorporates this factor in her book. I also loved how she  explained in detailed the symbolism used in the tombs.

The characters in this book are complex and endearing. 

Amelia is woman with a difficult and different life. Having the ability to see ghost hasn’t make her life any easier, just more complicated. Since she was a child she has been the odd one. Always living by her father rules, rules she repeat daily almost as a mantra.

The book is told in first person from Amelia’s point of view; this makes it easier for us to connect with her, also to feel the conflicts and loneliness because of her gift. Amelia is a strong woman, no in the sense of being a kick-ass heroine, but in the sense of living her life as best as possible with the limitations and difficulties she has.

John Devlin is a tortured and broken man, who goes through life without really living it. He is dark, intense and full of secrets. He is a man with a very painful and tragic past, who doesn’t think he deserves any happiness. I really ache for him and what he has lived.

The relationship between Amelia and Devlin is tense to say the least. There is an undeniable attraction between them, but first and foremost, Devlin is Amelia’s forbidden fruit, while Devlin’s pain doesn’t let him to move on and be happy.

This book supporting characters are also very interesting; I really loved Regina and Ethan. I also like how the city of Charleston is described, with its quirks and all making it feel almost as another character.

The Restorer has become one of my favorite reads of this year. It’s a book with a clever and original plot, with great characters and with a perfect pace for this kind of book. The Restorer has also the ideal mix of suspense and mystery with a (very light) touch of romance. I usually like my books with a HEA but I was very happy with the end of this book. In my opinion Mrs. Stevens ended it how it should have ended. There are things left unsolved and secrets left untold, especially in regard to Amelia’s father. But this didn’t discomfort me; just let me anxious waiting for November to read the next book in this series, The Kingdom.

I’m usually not a cover person, I read the book without giving a second thought about the cover, but with this book it was different, I really loved its cover.

Amanda Stevens is an author I’ll follow closely from now on (without being stalker).  And I think you should do the same. Please follow my advice and pick a copy of this book as soon as you can, you won’t regret it.

Friday's Short Review: Forever Vampire by Michelle Hauf

It took me some time to get into this book. Vail is a character difficult to like. He doesn’t know who he really is. He is a vampire who was raised in Fairy; there the fairies taught him to hate vampires.  So he is a vampire who hates vampires. After being banished from Fairy he is back to the real world where he has never live before and doesn’t know how to “live” in it. Still he dresses and behaves as the typical stereotypical vampire. He drives an expensive car, a gift from Rhys Hawkes who is his uncle/stepfather (yes, you read that right) and crashes it everywhere he goes because he doesn’t know how to drive. He doesn’t know anything about the value of things and spends (gives away) money left and right, money given by Rhys too.

He doesn’t want anything to do with his family but he takes freely what Rhys gives him.

When Rhys offers him a job in which he has to find Lyric Santiago and the fairy diamond gown she was wearing, when she disappeared a couple of nights ago; he is relentless to accept the job offer, but ended up acceding in exchange for information of his father’s whereabouts. His father Constantine (Rhys’ brother) raped his mother, and Vail is the fruit of that rape. Vail now wants to finds him to kill him for what he did to his mother.

Soon after he starts to look for Lyric he locates her, and follows her to her hiding place. There he tied her up to the bed and “tortures” her to get answers, but his torture is more rape than anything else. Ok, Lyric allegedly gets off of what he does to her. But in my opinion, when a man takes a woman captive, tied her up, cuts her clothes open with a knife and then starts to sexually molests her… even if your body reacts to it, that is not torture, that is rape. After that scene and Lyric reaction and acceptance of the situation, I was a little bit put off with the book.

After this event they hit it off and start to help each other deciphering the mystery that surrounds the dress and a deal Lyric’s mother had made with Zett, Lord of Midsummer Dark. At the same time they are helping each other fight their own demons.

Vail and Lyric’s union felt a little bit rushed. They got too closed too fast with no real deepness in their relationship.

Vail was supposed to look not just for Lyric but the fairy gown she disappeared with, too. There is even a limited time to find the gown and return it. If the gown is not returned by certain date, Rhys is going to get in big trouble with the Seelie Court. But after getting together with Lyric is like he forgets all about this little detail. Apart from the moment when he meets her and “tortures” her to get information from her, he doesn’t question Lyric again about the location of the gown. Also the events at the end, with his mother and father felt a little bit forced.

My final thought: Forever Vampire has some faults, but in the end it was an entertaining read. This was my first book by Michele Hauf, and even though I wasn’t very pleased with it, and just found it OK; I might give this author another chance and read something else by her in the future.

Review: Alien in the Family by Gini Koch

Alien in the Family is the third book in the Katherine “Kitty” Katt Series. It starts six months after the events in Alien Tango.

Kitty and Martini are doing the preparations for their wedding, or at least pretending to. But there is so much to do and so many people to please that it’s not an easy task. While this is happening Chuckie contacts them and shows them a strange atmospheric phenomenon that is occurring in certain area at midnight. When Martini sees it he realizes the symbols in the sky are a message from Alpha Centuri, letting them know a Royal commission is coming to earth to attend their wedding.

At a meeting considering the implications of this visit Kitty learns Martini is the heir to the throne in Alpha Centauri. And after much thought, they realize the commission is not coming to attend the nuptials, they are coming to test Kitty, to see if she is worthy of Martini.

If this was not enough to have them busy and preoccupied, there is also a group of extraterrestrial Amazonians who want to kill every male they get in proximity with and take over the world.

After hearing/reading so much about this series, last week I said ok, let’s give it a try, and bought Touch by an Alien. This ended up in a Katherine “Kitty” Katt marathon, what that means… I read these books one behind the other. These books are amazing! They have everything I like in a book. They have great plots, beautiful characters, are well pace with a touch of mystery, lots of action and laughs, lots of gorgeous men and lots of sexy time. What a perfect combination.

In Alien in the Family Kitty’s emotional limits are put to a test. She is dealing with so many things at the same time that I would not want to be on her shoes (or maybe I would, but just because of Martini, yum). Even though the times are not easy for Kitty, she continue being the same snarky, lustful, witty woman who does everything for the ones she loves and cares.

Sometimes she was a little bit “too badass” for my taste; the problem with that was that it didn’t feel real, it felt more like acting in a kind of forced way. Despite this, I still love her; she is one of my favorites heroines.

Martini is still the same sex on stick, in love, and sentimental man. What I liked a lot about him in this book is that he is starting to have a more pronounce sense of humor. I loved when he was being sarcastic, it seems some of Kitty is rubbing on him.

Martini is also trying to deal with his jealousy issues. He is doing better but still he has his caveman behavior moments. But I forgive him because he is such a caring and loving man. *swoons*

I liked Reader in the previous books, but in this one he surpassed my expectations for his character. He was a great focal point in the story, bringing laughs and emotional turmoil to the pages. I loved the friendship between Kitty and him. Their love is palpable through out the book. With Operation About Time, Reader proves he is every girl’s dream BFF.

Something very serious happened to Reader and I think there is more to come regarding what happened after this incident. Because some things were left unexplained concerning him. I’m guessing we will learn more about the “why and how” of this in future books.

All the characters we love from previous books are also here, plus we met many more interesting ones.

Chuckie stands out in this installment. Despite being heart broken, he accepts what cannot be, and tries to be the best friend possible for Kitty, leaving his feelings on the side. I really liked him and I don’t understand why the A-C dazzlers don’t pay any attention to him. It may be because they know he loves somebody else, but I really wish him a HEA.

This book also brings us the most divine creatures call “Poofs”.  They are furry, fluffy and purr. I want one, or two or a dozen! They are adorable.

I loved Alien in the Family, ok, I really loved all the books in this series. They are all great and I cannot recommend them enough. These books could be read as a stand-alone book, but please don’t do that. Read them all and in order. I can guarantee you won’t regret it. Mrs. Gini Koch is a gifted writer that will have you trap with her prose and plots without you even noticing it.

I can’t wait to December to read the next book in the series Alien Proliferation.

• With Kevin’s addition, it meant there were three women and just and entire roomful of hunky men with us. I loved briefings.

• There were the usual personnel milling about doing things I still, after a year, didn’t understand or try to learn about. I was dedicated that way.
• “Ummm…” Chuckie hadn’t seen the twins in a while, but I could tell he wanted to get back in touch with them.

• “Chuckie, do I have time to take a shower?” – “Yes, please,” he called. “The others might lie to you, but, trust me, you need one, unless your new fragrance is Eau de Rank.”

The Vampire Dimitri is the second book in The Regency Draculia Trilogy. The events relating in this book are happening paralleled to the events in the first book in the trilogy, The Vampire Voss.

With Chas Woodmore escape (elope) with Cezar Moldavi’s sister, Narcisa and their consequential disappearance.  Chas sisters Maia, Angelica and Sonia are in great danger. Cezar Moldavi wants revenge for the insult and nothing will stop him until he makes Chas pay for his actions.

Chas has left detailed instructions of what to do if he hasn’t contacted his sisters in two weeks time. If that ever occurs they will be place under the protection of Dimitri, Earl of Corvindale.

When a fortnight passes without knowledge of Chas whereabouts, Maia follows her brother’s instructions and contacts the Earl. The last thing Dimitri wants is a complication in his life, but he gave Chas his word of honor promising he would take care of his sisters if the need arise. He knows Moldavi is a dangerous character, he is one of the Dracule or vampire with the worst reputation. Dimitri knows this because he is also a Dracule. He also knows that if Moldavi is after the Woodmore sisters they are in great peril.

Dimitri decides that Sonia would continue her stay at the convent school in Scotland where she is attending; she will be safe enough there. But with Maia and Angelica things are not as easy, he would need to move them into his house where it will be easier for him to protect them.  

Maia is unaware of the gravity of the situation, she doesn’t know anything about vampires or believe they even exist. She is not happy with their move to the Earl’s home but she agrees because she needs to obey her brother’s dispositions. Also her stay at the Earl house would be temporal, soon she’ll be marrying her betrothed Alexander and as a married woman there won’t be any need for her to be under the Earl’s guardianship.

Dimitri has torturous existence. Over hundred years back he gave his soul to save the woman he loved or at least thought he was in loved with. And his great sacrifice was paid with disdain. Since then he has been reading and investigating with not avail everything he has been able to get in his hands, always trying to find a cure to that would free him from his curse.

When he meets “miss proper” Maia Woodmore he feels an instant attraction towards her, an attraction that he tries with all his mighty to control; he is a vampire and a being like him doesn’t have anything to offer a decent woman like her. Also she makes him crazy, always demanding things from him and taking control over his house.

I loved Dimitri in The Vampire Voss and this book made me love him even more.

Maia is the example of a proper Lady, or at least is the image she is trying to show the world. She is a strong woman. After the dead of her parents she took the reins of her household and has been almost like a mother to her siblings. She is also a very stubborn and a very outspoken woman, I would say sometimes too much. She also comes a little bit as a control freak. But I think her best quality was her bravery.

The way the attraction between Dimitri and Maia was developing in this book was well presented and believable. You learn to love them with their faults and qualities and with each page you find yourself pining for them to have their happy ending. Their personalities are very contrary but at the same time very complementing. This is one of those couple that really feels they are meant to be together. And seeing them fighting all the obstacles to get to that moment was a very agreeable experience.

After reading The Vampire Voss I felt in love with Dimitri and was very eager to read his book.  In my opinion this book is better that the previous one, just because Dimitri is a better hero than Voss.

But, yes there is a big “but” with this book and it’s that it was very repetitive. During almost the first half of this book the same events and scenes that occurred in The Vampire Voss are presented in this book but shown from a different character point of view. Still this different perspective didn’t make the scenes in anyway more interesting or different it just made them repetitive and superfluous, forcing me to skim over pages at a time. If this had not been the case The Vampire Dimitri would have been a better read.
